We compare some Tactical Pants
An overview with pictures

Two popular brands of pants for Tactical Shooters are 5.11 and Woolrich. We've owned a few pairs of each and here's a break down of them after about 3 months of use and washings.

5.11 Tactical Pants

These were the first 'tactical' pants I bought at the recommendation of more than a few people who own them. They are not giving these away at $50 retail. This is the OD green color long pants, 7 pockets. Made in Hong Kong

On the back right side there is a weird strap and up front one of the belt loops has a key ring loop, in case you wanted to hang some noisy keys out there during your 'tactical' event

Here's the zipper, the key ring loop which i actually use for my electronic years when in training and they are being taken on and off a lot. The 5.11 pockets are reinforced at the4 bottom which is handy for any of us who wear knives / lights. keys, etc on pocket clips

The most 'tactical' feature is the phone pocket on the left thigh. With a simple velcro flap, this phone pocket makes getting to your cell phone very easy with one hand, while your other is on the gun.

Woolrich Tactical Pants

After owning a pair of the 5.11s I looked around and was told the Woolrich were made in the USA, so I bought a pair. Turns out they are made in CHINA?? This pair cost $40-50 at full retail. They are OK, not very different from the 5.11 but they are not the same. The Woolrich has a second leg pocket like the 5.11 cell phone pocket, but on both legs. Woolrich also has model with an additional pair of pockets on the ankles. With the ankle pockets, wallet pockets and the rest the Woolrich have 12 pockets

The side pocket could hold a small frame revolver while the ankle pocket would be too small for a KelTec

The leg (cell phone) pockets on the Woolrich are larger than the 5.11 and can fit a KelTec or a few spare Glock Mags easily

Of course the pockets can also fit about any cell phone with room to spare I keep a spare mag in with my cell phone in my Woolrich pants

Inside the fly there is a button to help keep them shut. A close up of the wider belt loops and the key ring loop

The Woolrich use a button, not a snap like the 5.11 pants. The zippers are about the same. The Woolrich has a separate wallet pocket above the large rear cargo pocket

Another feature that makes these pants tactical is the large rear cargo pocket great for empty magazines, or even a place to put an empty pistol in a hurry

I figure it is from using a paddle holster for spare mags... but the threads broke and the Woolrich pants have fallen apart at the waistband

Carhartt Work Pants

These are just a typical rust color work pants. Made in the USA !! These usually cost under $40 retail Hardly tactical by design, but these rugged pants can stand up to almost any abuse. These are available in about any color. Made in USA, and cheaper by about $10 - 15 usually

The side pocket is too small for the KelTec. The button fly and zipper, tough and well built

The work pants have no side cargo pockets, but the side tool pockets will hold a cell phone.

SIde by Side

Here are the 5.11 and Woolrich pants side by side to compare their pockets / features

The belt loops on the 5.11 are much wider than the Woolrich which are more like a typical pant belt loop pattern

On the 5.11 pant, there are much fewer belt loops, only 4 in fact , so placing a holster is no problem. The Woolrich have a belt loop right on the side (where many people put their holsters usually)

The 5.11 has the reinforced pockets for a knife, light, etc while the Woolrich does not.

Turning them inside out, first here are the labels compared

The zippers and flys. The 5.11 use a snap, the Woolrich uses a better, more secure button. Both have a button on the inside as well (the 5.11 button fell off)

Still inside out, the pockets on each brand have a place for knees pads. Here is the 'hole' inside to put that pad in place. 5.11hole is a bit bigger, but basically this feature is the same on each

Looking at the seams inside three styles. Carhartt on top, 5.11 and Woolrich. All are triple stitched, but the woolrich is the least 'tight' over time

Still inside out, looking at the pockets. The Carhartt has the typical pocket like a pair of jeans. The Woolrich has an obvious additional set of pockets in the rear. Also the Woolrich has obvious square pockets, while the 5.11 are rounded to eliminate corners for things to get lost in.

5.11 Shorts

While shorts are less tactical. 5.11 does make shorts as well as pants.(The others do too, I just don't own them). The 5.11 shorts have a different brand name for some reason. I suspect their 'tactical' line is also a 'hiking' line as well

The reinforced pockets for a knife / light, etc are not a feature of the shorts
