We took a look at this handy
little light that mounts to a helmet
and offers hands free work lighting and
an infrared blinking signal light. Uses one
battery (123A style) which fits into the large
area of the unit with a disable switch on the
back
|
The watertight unit uses six LEDs
to produce three different types of
light at multiple power levels. Here
itison a PASGT (Personnel Armor System
Ground Troops) Helmet

|
|
SIts on the helmet to the side
and stays out of the way
until needed, or can be removed when
not in use

|
|
On another style of helmet, the MICH
(Modular
Integrated Communications Combat
Helmet), it seems to work fine
on multiple helmet types. There is
even an additional attachment for
mounting on web gear

|
|
Uses three
5mm white-light and two
5mm blue-light LEDs each with low,
medium, and high output levels

|
|
There are two style of
the same unit. The first ones
had no disable switch on the battery
compartment, and the new style adds
covers to protect the switches which
turned on easily with the first design

|
|
While very close to the newer
models, you can see how with no protection,
the older model could be easily
turned on accidentally

|
|
To stop the old one from accidentally
turning on in use or in
storage, the best bet
is to remove the battery
|
|
The newer version has the disable
switch in the end cap which can
be used with gloves

|
|
The top switch is three position,
up is the three white LEDs, the lower
position of the top switch is the two
blue LEDs. The bottom switch
is the IR blinker. Although small,
and now behind a bump guard, these
switches are still easy to find
and use with gloves

|
|
Used a few styles of glove to test
the switches, the switches were easy
to locate with the guards, then simple
to manipulate even with heavy
leather gloves

|
|
The switches are sturdy and rubber
coated to maintain a watertight unit

|
|
The button on the outside of
the main unit is the brightness switch,
when either the white or blue
LEDs are turned on, the button toggles
between high, medium and low power
levels.

The light can be removed from
it's bracket so removing the
light from the helmet for
safe storage during the
day, or swapping out lights is
easy, just push the release button
and move the light forward

|
|
The bracket is attached with three screws

|
|
The heavy duty clamp attaches to
the helmet securely and the light slides
onto the bracket and locks in place
for use
